Definition

Serve as first assistant engineering officer aboard an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action;

Under general supervision, serve as first assistant engineering officer in the operation and maintenance of propulsion and auxiliary machinery of a diesel electric powered ocean research ship, 6000 HP.

Typical Work

Stand engine room watch as operating engineer of propulsion, auxiliary and electric machinery;

Supervise engineering department personnel;

Responsible for the maintenance of machine shop and equipment;

Responsible for the maintenance and readiness of various plants;

Prepare watch schedules and crew stations;

Plan for and instruct subordinate engineering personnel;

Direct routine maintenance and affect emergency repair of propulsion and auxiliary machinery and electrical systems;

Responsible for inventory of replacement and spare parts, fuels, lubricants and other provisions necessary for the operation of the machinery of the vessel;

Provide administrative support to the chief engineer in the compilation of reports or gathering of data;

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

A U.S. Coast Guard First Assistant Engineer's license valid for operation of a 6000 HP inspected ocean motor vessel.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
