Definition
Maintain cleanliness of engine room and machinery, assist in routine maintenance on an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under direct supervision, clean engine room equipment and assist in routine maintenance.
Typical Work
Perform general clean-up of engineering spaces, machinery, and unlicensed engineer's living space;
Assist as help in routine maintenance and repair of machinery;
Learn the routine of lubricating machinery, taking readings of operating machinery, and methods of keeping operating records;
Stand security watches;
Perform related duties as required.
Legal Requirement(s)
Entry rating U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's document endorsed "Wiper" or a temporary permit to sail as wiper.
