Perform unlicensed deck duties aboard an ocean research ship of approximately 200 gross tons.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under direct supervision, perform semi-skilled and unskilled deck duties.
Typical Work
Stand watches as lookout; may stand wheel watch except in restricted or inland waters;
Paint, chip and clean weather deck structure, interior spaces and hull;
Assist in preservation and repair of common deck or rigging equipment;
Conduct daily sanitary cleaning of assigned living spaces;
Handle lines when berthing or leaving a berth;
Repair and splice lines;
Polish equipment fixtures;
Lash deck cargo and gear under supervision of Mariner II or Mate;
Stand security watch;
Perform clean up work;
Perform related duties as required.
Legal Requirement(s)
Entry rating U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's document endorsed "Ordinary Seaman"
OR
A temporary permit to sail as ordinary seaman.
