CONSTRUCTION PROJECT COORDINATOR 1
Class Series Concept
Coordinates, directs and reviews the development of designs and specifications by private design firms for the construction, renovation and repair of state buildings and/or vessels; coordinates and directs the planning, scheduling, project and cost control of complex building, vessel, or utilities construction projects. This class series is distinguishing from professional engineers and architect in the no registration is required.
Definition
This is the first level of the series. Positions at this level perform under direct supervision, carrying out routine tasks and assisting in the preparations for and the administration of construction and renovation projects. These positions support higher-level staff by facilitating communications, estimating costs, producing reports, and maintaining project records.
Typical Work
Reads architectural and engineering plans to determine materials quantities, square footage, and specified construction methods;
Reads plans and specifications to determine cost estimates, resolve field problems, and verifies accurate installation;
Applies unit costs to determine cost estimates for capital construction projects;
Assists in the review of contractor submitted change order proposals;
Provides cost information to designers to aid in the preparation of plans and specifications;
Provides information to aid in the preparation of project estimates, contracts, plans and specifications;
Prepares, receives, reviews and/or transmits construction related correspondence such as contractor's request for information, owner's requests for additional work or schedule change, contractor's request for utility shutdown or regulatory agency instructions and reviews;
Prepares correspondence, reports and construction change notifications; processes change orders and negotiates pricing for construction coordinator or project manager approval;
Conducts field inspections to determine construction site conditions and make field sketches as appropriate; recommends changes to contract drawings to resolve field problems;
Prepares construction progress reports; reviews contractors’ requests for payment and recommend action to construction coordinator or project manager;
Assists in the review of the completed project and note deficiencies;
Performs tasks necessary to ensure site access for contractors, test labs, consultants, inspectors, etc.;
Assists in identifying need for and coordinating utility outages, traffic disruption and space vacations; prepares necessary notifications;
Assists in inspecting the quality of work and materials;
Facilitates communications with designers, contractors and other project participants;
May supervise or direct the work of others;
Maintains project records.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: principles of project management for building construction; theory, principles and practices of engineering and architecture related to design and construction of buildings; fundamentals of electrical and structural engineering; effectiveness and energy conservation aspects of various air conditioning and heating systems, water and waste water systems, appurtenances to electrical systems, and hardware and other appurtenances adding to convenience, comfort, efficiency, safety and handicapped accessibility of complex buildings; conservation cost estimating, conservation techniques and practices; administrative procedures and systems relating to capital projects and supervisory principles and practices.
Ability to: use sound judgment on difficult engineering/architectural problems; understand and interpret written and oral directions, specifications and plans, deal tactfully and positively with engineers, architects and others in the private sector as well as state officials; complete projects on schedule, within appropriation amounts and in accordance with.

Desirable Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in architecture, naval architecture, engineering, building construction, marine engineering or closely allied field.
