Definition

Positions independently perform professional level ward-based non-clinical work and patient care of mentally ill patients in a state hospital or community residential treatment facility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Mental Health Technician 3 is distinguished from the MHT 2 in that positions in this class have the additional responsibility for ward-based non-clinical work including physical environment of care, non-medical supply management and logistics. In addition to tracking, documenting and monitoring patient property, valuables (to include monetary transactions), and mail.

Typical Work

Ensures adequate ward/unit supplies; completes supply inventories; rotates stock to prevent expiration of supplies;

Assists patients with managing their personal property, valuables and funds;

Completes equipment inventory, environmental rounds and work order for repairs and maintenance;

Initiates and tracks completion of work orders on ward/living unit; informs contractors/maintenance staff of the issue and ensures their safety while on the ward/living unit;

Performs safety inspections of ward/living unit in accordance with facility policies and procedures;

Provides direction and mentoring to newly assigned staff to the ward/living unit;
Performs other related work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: hospital or facility procedures and processes; de-escalation processes; blood-borne pathogen protocols, CPR, non-violent crisis intervention, seclusion/restraint procedures, patient rights, trauma-informed care principles, preventing patient abuse/neglect, computer skills.

Ability to: interact therapeutically with patients and professionally and respectfully with co-workers at all times, work collaboratively with other team members; organize and track patient and ward/living unit inventory; respectfully provide direction to other staff; take direction from Registered Nurses; exhibit resilience and be willing to interact with verbally and physically aggressive patients; observe multiple patients and teammates the entire work shift to ensure the work environment remains safe; work closely with members of the ward/living unit team to effectively move patients towards their treatment goals; listen to patients and develop creative ways to help them move towards their treatment goals; be flexible in moving quickly from one task to another; have compassion and concern for patients and treat patients and staff with respect, kindness and consideration.

Positions in this job classification require a current, unincumbered Washington state Nurse Assistant Registration, Nursing Assistant Certified certification or a current unincumbered Washington state Certified Medical Assistant certification.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent
AND
Three years of experience in a psychiatric or mental health setting.
