Definition

Supervises and evaluates rehabilitation program patients in the use of woodshop tools and equipment for the purpose of developing physical manipulative skills and evaluating patients' job success potential.

(This class exists in a rehabilitation center shop where patients are reassigned for an average stay of 6 to 8 weeks most patients were formerly in trades related to the timber products or building and construction industries. Some are journeyman carpenters and cabinet makers. Technical instruction is generally limited to specific projects, the aim being toward physical restoration instead of vocational training.)

Typical Work

Assists rehabilitative patients in the selection of woodworking projects which offer maximum opportunity to practice manipulation and to strengthen damaged muscles, to develop skill in the use of prosthetic devices, and to develop patients' self confidence in their own physical abilities;

Observes manipulative improvement of each patient throughout his period of shop work; submits regular written and oral evaluations of potential job success and degree of job readiness; participates in evaluative council for purpose of planning individual patient rehabilitation program within the center;

Coordinates patients' use of shop dress and equipment to provide maximum availability of equipment commensurate with needs of individual patients;

Gives technical advice about how to complete specific projects, some of which pose complex cabinet making and wood finishing problems; encourages and persuades patients to complete shop projects in the face of fatigue and discouragement;

May supervise several Manual Arts or other rehabilitative assistants;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  wood furniture and cabinet construction, wood finishing, shop mathematics, blueprint reading, materials estimation; principles of supervision and classroom instruction.

Ability to: explain shop techniques to rehabilitation patients; evaluate physical recovery of patients through shop observation and consultation; select appropriate woodshop projects for specific types and degrees of disability; encourage patients toward optimism about their chances for recovery and ability to complete shop projects; learn muscular and skeletal structure and other human anatomy through ln-service training

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree involving major study in manual training or closely related field.

AND

One year of shop experience in the fabrication of boats, wood furniture, wood cabinets or other wood products.

OR

Journeyman level woodworking experience may be substituted, year for year, for the college education above, provided that at least two years of supervisory experience are included.
