Definition
Functions at the fully qualified journey-level. Positions allocated to this class perform bricklaying, plastering and cement finishing and alter, repair and maintain buildings, facilities, equipment or grounds.
Typical Work
Applies plaster on wood, metal lath, or plasterboard lath; do exterior and interior plastering, coating, and finishing; repair old or damaged plaster;
Constructs, maintains, and repairs concrete foundations for buildings and machinery; constructs pavements and walks;
Prepares cement floors, sidewalks, stairs and curbing; operates power hammers and power trowels;
Operates core drills, jackhammers, diamond saws to remove concrete and other surfaces for repairs and installations of conduit, air lines, etc.;
Estimates time and materials for jobs;
Pours concrete floors, walls and foundations; lays bricks and blocks as required;
Positions may supervise lower level staff, patients or inmates.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of masonry and plastering trades; safety precautions; basic computer skills.
Ability to: work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; apply plaster and stucco; estimate time and materials needed to complete jobs; work on scaffolds.

Desirable Qualifications
Positions typically require completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a mason/plasterer, or full journey status as a mason/plasterer in a union; or, four years’ applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.
