Class Series Concept
As staff psychiatrist in a mental hospital, administers psychiatric treatment of mentally ill patients.
Definition
This is the supervisory or expert level of the series. Supervises and participates in treatment of mentally ill; directs psychiatric treatment program of unit or section.
Typical Work
Supervises, trains, and evaluates work of medical and nursing staff; coordinates their work with related programs;
Reviews treatment plans, clerical records, diagnoses, and patient-release proposals for quality and adherence to institution policy;
Conducts or participates in meetings on clinical and administrative policy, research programs, and treatment techniques;
Examines and evaluates patients for admission or discharge;
Examines, diagnoses, and prescribes treatment for mentally ill patients;
Prepares reports and correspondence on treatment programs, hospital policy, and patient progress;
May supervise lower level staff.

Desirable Qualifications
Valid license to practice medicine and surgery in State of Washington.
AND
Eligibility for certification by American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
