Provide advanced clinical expertise in ophthalmic care; provide leadership for specific clinic services and programs such as refractive and cosmetic surgery, and orthoptic procedures such as evaluating and measuring deviations of the ocular motor system and conducting visual alignment tests; act as clinical resource for staff; coordinate daily operations of the unit.

Under general direction, provide patient care in a specialty area such as refractive and cosmetic surgery, and orthoptic assessment and treatment such as measurement of eye movement for optimum care which may include eye muscle surgery or corrective lenses. In the clinical specialty, confer with patients, explain procedures and outcomes to patients, and actively market the services of the clinic. Perform specific leadership functions related to clinic practice such as scheduling, orientation, and feedback on staff performance.

Serves as a role model for staff through demonstration of clinical expertise in a specialized service or program; 

Prepares and tests the laser for refractive surgery to ensure appropriate functioning; prepares and sets the laser for each patient’s procedure; performs circulating functions during refractive surgery such as setting up the surgical room, readying equipment, preparing the patient’s eye, and positioning the patient for surgery; evaluates the safety of the microkeratome for every refractive surgery case; 

Screens and consults with potential candidates for refractive laser surgery; promotes the surgical and other services of the clinic; develops patient education materials; 

Conducts measurements and designs individual treatment plans to correct and/or cope with visual eye alignment problems;

Performs treatment by establishing exercise training for vision therapy; 

Maintains detailed and accurate daily records of technical and statistical components of treatment; 

Participates in evaluation and development of programs such as marketing strategies, expansion of clinic/service hours, and clinic readiness for staff increases; 

Initiates quality improvement activities such as maintaining the clinical outcomes database and initiating systems modifications to clinic operations; 

Maintains a clean environment; sterilizes instruments; and maintains and monitors the functioning of equipment; 

Initiates clinic maintenance activities such as evaluating supply inventory, assessing equipment, and equipment maintenance procedures; 

Provides work direction and guidance to staff; observes, reviews and provides feedback on staff performance; 

Utilizes clinical expertise to provide planned and spontaneous learning activities to patients, families and staff;  

Develops staffing schedule; 

Participates in staff interviews and provides information and observations to the employing official; 

Performs related duties as required.

Completion of an ophthalmic or orthoptic technician program

AND 

Two years of experience in a healthcare setting

AND 

Certification appropriate for the clinical specialty 

Equivalent education/experience.
