Definition
Performs routine, entry level bindery work in a high volume, large format (over 22”) offset print shop.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this class gain experience in the set up, operation, and maintenance of bindery equipment in a high volume offset print shop characterized by specialized, high speed finishing equipment capable of complex finishing of large format (over 22”) print jobs.
Positions operate limited equipment independently (for example, multiple head drills, single function stitchers, GBC punches, wire and coil binding machines, eye letting machines) where assignments are reoccurring or of limited scope, however, instructions for completing work assignments are specific and supervisory guidance is provided when necessary to resolve issues. Positions support the feeding and take off of more complex equipment (such as in-line stitcher trimmers, automatic collating equipment, and single function adhesive binders) under the guidance and close review of a higher level Bindery Specialist.
Positions also perform hand bindery work, hand collating, and wrapping of packages of finished materials.
Typical Work
Under supervision, operates bindery equipment such as single head and multiple head drills, counting machines, hand stitchers, GBC punches, spiral comb, padding machine, shrink wrapper, laminator, thermal binder, string and banding machines, and postage meter;
Collates material by hand;
Performs hand bindery work;
Packages finished material;
Assists higher level Bindery Specialists with the feeding, take off, quality inspection, and boxing off of such equipment as saddle stitch trimmer, collator, adhesive perfect binders, Scitex and videojet labelers, inserting machines, cutters, and folding machines;
Performs other duties as required.Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: materials, methods, and equipment used in bindery work and available product options.
Ability to: interpret and follow simple oral and written instructions; operate the specific tools and equipment used in the area of expertise, including related tools and equipment; meet deadlines and production requirements and perform bindery activities quickly and accurately.

Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent
AND
One year of experience in a production facility.
