Definition

Supervises crews of carpenters performing new construction and general maintenance work throughout the State.

Typical Work

Plans, lays out, directs, and inspects work of crews of carpenters, helpers, and laborers or crew of inmates engaged in new construction work and in maintenance and repair of structures, walls, floors, windows, screens, sashes, doors, furniture, fixtures, stairs, cupboards, roofs, and cabinets;

Schedules and coordinates dates for arrival of personnel, supplies and equipment in accordance with established completion schedule;

Recommends repairs or remodeling and consults with supervisors and others on projects;

Determines material and personnel requirements; orders or purchases materials and schedules equipment, personnel and materials for each job;

Inspects work of electrical and plumbing contractors;

Keep field payroll and work progress records; submits regular reports orally and in writing;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of carpentry trade; construction blueprints; fundamentals of construction engineering; lumber types and grades; safety precautions; record keeping; basic computer skills.
Ability to: read interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimate materials and personnel needed to complete project; schedule crews of carpenters or inmates to accomplish construction or repair objectives; sharpen and set saws; keep payroll records and prepare reports; issue clear directions orally and in writing.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Four years of journey level full time work as a carpenter, one of which must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.
Some positions may require a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
