CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT 1
Definition
Supervises, through crew supervisors, large force account construction and repair jobs; acts as construction inspector on large contract jobs.
Typical Work
Schedules, directs, coordinates, and inspects various phases of construction work being performed on force account;
Supervises construction and inspection of jobs such as flood control dams, roads, fish ladders, pipe lines for hatchery operations, laboratories, equipment repair shops, and docks;
Estimates personnel requirements; appoints craftsmen, equipment operators, and laborers;
Schedules and coordinates dates for arrival of personnel, supplies, and equipment in accordance with completion dates given him;
Maintains field payroll records and work progress records; submits regular reports orally and in writing;
Serves as project inspector on large, contract construction jobs such as hatcheries, large dams and fishways, and buildings; makes day‑to‑day estimates or tallies of quantities on unit price work and percentage completion on lump‑sum contracts;
Makes minor changes in plans and specifications, such as location changes for electrical outlets and substitution of non‑critical hardware items;
Computes quantities of materials needed from engineering plans and specifications;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: construction methods, equipment and materials commonly used in construction of flood control dams, pipe lines, roads, and buildings such as hatcheries and laboratories; construction blueprints; fundamentals of construction engineering.
Ability to: coordinate schedules for work supplies, equipment, and personnel; supervise and train others; issue clear directions, orally and in writing; interpret all commonly used engineering symbols and specifications.

Desirable Qualifications
Five years of construction experience, one year of which was as a supervisor or general building contractor with full responsibility for crew of subordinates including journey‑level trades‑persons.
College training involving major study in engineering may be substituted, year for year, for non‑supervisory experience.
