Definition
In a training capacity, assists in highway and landscape maintenance; drilling; parts supply service; or mechanical equipment service by performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks under close supervision.
Typical Work
(Highway Maintenance) - Under close supervision, makes minor repairs to roadway, operates snow plow, loader, salt and sand spreading equipment in snow removal and ice control; paints and replaces guard rail; picks up rubbish and debris from roadway; cuts brush, trees and other vegetation; cleans ditches and culverts; cleans rest rooms, replenishes toilet supplies, empties garbage and litter containers and transports to disposal site; makes minor adjustments and setting of automatic and manual sprinklers; and learns to operate trucks and other highway maintenance Class A equipment that is specifically identified on the Department of Transportation Equipment List;
(Landscape Maintenance) - Under close supervision, performs hand labor in landscape areas such as hand and chemical weeding; mowing and trimming grass; hand watering; sets automatic and manual sprinklers; makes minor adjustments to water system and equipment;
(Drilling) - Under close supervision, assembles tools and materials; assists in the operation of a foundations exploration drill; makes simple repairs to drilling, sampling, and field test equipment; operates light equipment, such as chain saws, outboard motors, or pump motors;
(Parts Service) - Under close supervision, performs such duties as ordering automobile parts; checks field orders and purchase orders against shippers' list and parts received; prepares and maintains shop requisitions, Kardex system, and perpetual inventory records;
(Equipment Service) - Under close supervision, assists in routine maintenance of Department service vehicles, including lubrication, replacing exhaust systems parts, checking and maintaining proper oil levels; pumps gas, cleans vehicles, repairs tires, and other minor routine maintenance items;
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: various types of equipment; standard practices necessary for proper operation of hand tools and motor-driven equipment; safety practices; automotive parts, and storage methods.
Ability to: read and write; understand and carry out simple written and oral instructions; perform various types of manual labor; perform outside work as may be required in all types of weather; operate various types of motor-operated equipment and hand tools; make simple arithmetical computations.
Legal Requirement(s)
A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B, without air brakes restriction must be attained within the first six months of employment for certain positions.
Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
Notes:
Applicants must have reached 18 years of age at the time of appointment, and possess a valid driver's license.
Special Note:
This is a training class. Incumbents, therefore, shall be automatically advanced to Maintenance Technician 1, or Equipment Parts Specialist 1, after completing one (1) year of satisfactory service.
