Definition

Supervises three or more Scale Technicians, inspects, repairs, tests, certifies, and installs portable platform scales, wheel-load weighers, small evidence scales, health scales, and motor truck scales to a capacity of 100,000 pounds. Testifies as an expert witness in courts of law.

Typical Work

Supervises and serves as a leadworker of a crew engaged in installations, overhauls, certifications, and repairs;

Estimates material and personnel costs for projects;

Prepares technical specifications for the purchase of new and replacement weighing instruments;

Prepares and conducts training classes in equipment technology, repair, and operation;

Prepares and schedules court appearances of subordinates and testifies in court as a witness to the accuracy of scales and the theory of metrology;

Prepares technical drawings and specifications for new installations and modifications to existing instruments;

Prepares lesson plans and conducts training classes for law enforcement personnel in the proper use of weighing equipment;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: the principles and design of various makes of weighing devices, standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in making repairs, overhauls, testing, and certifications. Use of gas and electric welding equipment in making repairs to the different ferrous and non-ferrous metals used in scale construction. National Bureau of Standards Handbook, 44-Specifications, Tolerances, and Regulations for commercial and Law Enforcement Weighing and Measuring Devices. Proper court procedures. Occupational hazards, safety precautions of heavy construction, and operation of heavy equipment.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Four years of experience maintaining and installing motor truck scales to a capacity of 100,000 pounds, which includes testifying as an expert witness in courts of law, and one year of supervisory experience.

Four years of experience as a Scale Technician or equivalent.

Note:  A valid Washington State Combination Vehicle Operator's license is required.  Extensive travel is required (80 percent or more).
