Definition

Directs a major statewide nutrition program in a headquarters office of the Department of Social and Health Services. These programs are: Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Food Program, Maternal and Child Health Program, Crippled Children Services Program, Dental Health Program, Chronic Disease Programs which include diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease and for nutrition programs at licensed personal and health care facilities and State institutions.

Typical Work

Works closely with representatives of other Federal, State, county, and city agencies as well as with local health departments in formulating cooperative agreements and plans for joint action; 

Commits the Department to participation in special programs and clinics such as for heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis, providing for services of a nutritionist; 

Plans and supervises nutrition instruction and in‑service training for paramedical and public health personnel, welfare agencies, schools, institutions, and voluntary organizations; provides consultative services for school lunch programs and special diet problems encountered by these agencies; 

Directs and participates in inspection of kitchen construction plans and review of menus and food preparation in all licensed hospitals, nursing homes, boarding houses, and psychiatric institutions; 

Supervises and participates in the training of public health nutrition graduate students who are assigned to the Department for field work; supervises several Nutrition Consultants 1 and clerical personnel; 

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  principles, theory, and practice of dietetics and public health nutrition including design of institutional menus, special diets, food preparation, sanitation, and hygiene; roles of State, Federal, local, and volunteer agencies in public health nutrition; principles of effective supervision and program management. 

Ability to:  use sound judgment in determining nutrition program priorities, assigning and following up on work of subordinates, volunteers, and cooperating personnel of other agencies; organize and present clear written and oral reports.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

A Master's degree involving major study in public health nutrition and completion of a dietetic internship. 

AND 

Four years of professional experience in nutrition or dietetics, including two years in supervisory, teaching, or consultant capacity and one year in public health agency. 

Equivalent education/experience.
