Definition
Performs semi-skilled repairs, maintenance and janitorial work in assigned rest area(s), or transportation shop, shed or other facility in conjunction with a rest area and assists the traveling public.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This class is distinguished from the Custodian classe by assignment to maintain a specific roadside rest area or transportation facilities involving, routine duties of turf, landscape, irrigation and domestic water system maintenance, and cleaning and sanitizing facilities with continuous daily contact with the traveling public.
Typical Work
Repairs or replaces defective light bulbs and minor electrical fixtures, resets electrical breakers;
Repairs or replaces hinges, handles and other minor hardware;
Repairs or replaces faucet washers, toilet and urinal flush valves;
Paints interior walls and partitions on a routine basis to obscure vandalism and graffiti;
Mows turf; hand weeds planting beds and sprays weeds on a regular basis;
Picks up and disposes of litter and other debris;
Empties garbage containers, replaces liners and disposes of garbage;
Washes and scrubs walls, floors and partitions; scrubs and disinfects toilet fixtures; refills towel, soap and tissue dispenses;
Cleans plugged drains;
Cleans and maintains RV dump stations;
Operates hand and automatic irrigation systems; makes minor repairs to irrigation and domestic water systems; operates and maintains records on water chlorinators;
Sweeps and flushes walks in summer; removes snow and ice from sidewalks in winter; applies deicing chemicals;
Maintains inventories of cleaning supplies and tools; requisitions replacement supplies and tools;
Responds to a wide variety of inquiries and complaints from the traveling public; assists stranded motorists;
Controls and assists nonprofit organizations dispensing free coffee;
Observes citizen behavior and advises law enforcement agency of potential illegal or disruptive actions;
Performs other related work as required.

Knowledge of: use and care of materials and tools used in minor repair and maintenance of public buildings; current janitorial practices; current safety procedures.
Ability to: work independently; maintain good relationships with the traveling public and nonprofit organizations; work various shifts; maintain public buildings; perform minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs; safely use hand and powered tools and equipment with a reasonable degree of skill; perform prolonged physical labor; work from a stepladder or scaffold; move with some agility; follow written and oral instruction; get along with the traveling public.

Desirable Qualifications
Ability to read and write.
AND
One year of experience in building and lawn maintenance, or performing semi-skilled/general carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing repair work.
A valid driver's license is required.
