Typical Work
Patrols and inspects buildings and grounds to detect and prevent fire, theft, illegal entry, escapes and property damage; examines gates, doors and windows to ensure security; checks exit lights biweekly;
Controls access to buildings; opens buildings and turns on lights and heat as necessary; turns off unnecessary lights; locks and unlocks public access doors; shuts off elevator; and locks areas at the end of the day;
Inspects for fire and safety hazards, makes corrections as necessary and/or as possible and reports needed repairs or action;
Leads and trains two or more security guards; monitors shift activities; checks reports for completeness and accuracy; evaluates persons to determine training needs; recommends personnel actions to security chief; dispatches mobile units; briefs relief guards; receives and reviews reports; completes daily shift logs and security reports, inspection reports and other paperwork;
Instructs new employees in operation of fire extinguishers and other fire fighting equipment; maintains fire fighting equipment in working order; responds to fire alarms and other threat conditions, such as bomb threats; resets fire alarms; assists safety officer in fire marshal duties as necessary; facilitates and assists in evacuation of buildings;
Monitors vehicles in parking areas to prevent vandalism or theft; responds to situations of stolen property, accidents, parking incidents and other disturbances or situations; recommends parking citations; issues citations for violations; reports illegal entry to law enforcement and campus security; reports disturbances and other incidents to law enforcement as necessary; secures areas until authorities arrive; assists law enforcement personnel upon request; expels loiterers;
Responds to non-felony incidents; writes reports for sheriff's department; assists local law enforcement as directed; logs all incidents and reports incident and safety issues; performs weapons and contraband checks; confiscates and stores contraband; serves in chain of custody with sheriff's department for confiscated and stored contraband;
Responds to life and death emergencies; provides emergency assistance, first aid and is back-up in problem situations; responds as directed by 911 emergency system dispatcher; responds to burglary alarms;
Directs and regulates traffic; investigates traffic accidents and property damage; responds to accidents off-campus by directing traffic and warning oncoming drivers of approaching danger; gathers and preserves evidence; represents sheriff's department in locating witnesses, serving subpoenas and preparing reports on misdemeanors; appears in court to testify and present evidence;
Receives lost property found on campus; receives complaints, obtains statements, and conducts preliminary investigations; intervenes in personnel and property risk incidents to diffuse situation;
Searches for patients and returns to hospital; assists nurses with new admits; uses a portable kit to test for illegal drugs prior to sending samples to crime lab;
Monitors arrival and departure of employees; directs visitors and others to parking areas and offices; provides information and assistance to individuals as necessary; escorts visitors, staff, students and residents to and from buildings; responds to telephone and public inquiries; promotes community and staff goodwill;
Checks in on other personnel working alone on the grounds; responds to pager; assists staff and others with personal safety concerns;
Transports lab specimens to local hospital; assists in transportation of deceased to morgue; coordinates with morgue for release of remains to families;
Transports ill residents to hospital; transports patients, money, records and classified documents between facilities; picks up classified papers and delivers to mailroom for shredding; deposits funds in the bank; transports food;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to: supervise, lead and train security guards; enforce rules and regulations; apply and comply with policies and procedures; follow written and verbal instructions; respond to emergencies and employ effective courses of action; apply first aid; diffuse altercations and problem situations; write clear and concise reports; observe and detect suspicious situations; communicate with hostile clients; gather and preserve evidence; assist law enforcement and fire department personnel.
Legal Requirement(s)
Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
One year of experience as a Security Guard 1.
OR
High school graduation or GED and two years of experience in areas of work such as: security guard, correctional officer or store investigations, or, police officer, police reserve officer, military police, or other law enforcement work.
OR
A certificate of completion in a basic law enforcement training program approved by the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission; or, a certificate of completion in a police or reserve police academy or military training program will substitute for one of the two years of required experience.
A valid driver's license is required.
