Definition
Visits clients' homes to teach and train families and individuals in homemaking skills and self-care according to plan formulated by the agency. Assists families or individuals to upgrade their living standards for self benefit and improved community acceptance.
Typical Work
Teaches improved methods of child care and discipline, household management, buying and preparation of food, to parents and older children;
Teaches methods of self-care, household management, food buying and preparation to ill, convalescing, disabled or aged individuals;
Evaluates situations, consults with professional staff, participates in planning for continuation and/or termination of service or alternatives;
Cares for family or members of family in their own home during temporary absence or incapacity of other responsible adult;
Manages home, performs necessary household tasks, such as laundry, ironing, cleaning;
Prepares economical and appetizing meals, including special diets as required;
Provides supportive and/or personal services to ill, convalescing, disabled or aged individuals;
Prepares reports and keeps records;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: child care, homemaking, family-style cooking, house cleaning, and household laundry.
Ability to: keep house and maintain family standards; prepare and keep routine records and reports; read, write and verbalize effectively; learn from in-service training; accept and use supervision constructively.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Desirable Qualifications
Three years of homemaking experience, including care of families and/or individuals.
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
