Definition

Supervises assigned personnel and coordinate the operation of a biomedical electronics facility involved in the development, repair, test, and calibration of general and specialized patient care, life support, and clinical laboratory equipment used in a health care facility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general direction, with delegated authority, interviews and recommends selection of applicants, conducts training, assigns and schedules work, acts upon leave requests, conducts performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary actions.

Provides technical support to professional and technical personnel and coordinates the operation of a biomedical facility such as receiving work requests and reviewing drawings and schematics; consulting with health care professionals and others on the design, fabrication, repair, inspection, and calibration of general and specialized patient care, life support, and clinical laboratory equipment;

Determines or recommends the choice of materials for use in fabrication; developing and implementing preventive maintenance programs.

Positions at the "1" level supervise assigned personnel and/or perform the duties of assistant supervisor to a Biomedical Electronics Technician Supervisor 2, or equivalent, in a central biomedical electronics facility.

Typical Work

Receives work requests and review drawings and schematics; consults with health care professionals, vendors, and other technical personnel on design concepts, cost estimates, equipment requirements and limitations, feasibility of fabrication and safety features of the equipment in use or construction; design, determines and/or recommends choice of materials, electronic components, etc;


Establishes work schedules, instructs and directs work operations, inspects work in progress and assures that standards of quality required by the work are met and that they meet federal, state, and local fire and electrical safety requirements; provides technical instruction and guidance on repair procedures;

Develops and/or directs the development and maintenance of an inventory of stock including electronic components such as transistors, integrated circuits, resistors, capacitors, as well as manufacture specific parts for patient care and/or clinical laboratory equipment such as circuit boards, modules, assemblies, etc.;

Maintains facility records and write reports as required;

Assists in, or makes arrangements for, vendor services;

Assists in formulating, instructing, and enforcing health and safety rules and insure facility cleanliness in accordance with area requirements; assists in formulating policies and procedures relative to workers' risk to exposure of viral, biological, and radiation safety hazards;

Assures personnel are properly trained in hospital and laboratory safety practices including biohazards, radiation safety, and operating room procedures, etc;

Investigates commercial practices and projects to improve facility operations;

Evaluates and/or directs evaluation of medical equipment involved in unusual incidents and prepares reports and documentation which may be germane in litigation; maintains legal chain of custody;

Develops and directs preventive maintenance on patient care and clinical laboratory equipment, facilities, tools, and specialized equipment;

Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience as a Biomedical Electronics Technician III or Lead

OR

Seven years of experience as a biomedical electronics technician OR equivalent education/experience
