ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN LEAD
Definition
Lead assigned personnel and perform complex engineering technician work designing, developing, manufacturing, assembling, installing, calibrating, and repairing instruments, apparatus, and equipment within a scientific, instructional or engineering application.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Regularly assign, instruct, and check the work of others. Under general direction, perform complex engineering technician work as a senior-level engineering technician. Determine most suitable design to achieve desired research goals. Perform complex engineering technician work such as: independently designing complete systems, peripherals, data acquisition programs, or interfaces; estimating equipment needs for shop; developing and maintaining preventive maintenance programs.
Typical Work
Consults with engineers, scientists, faculty, or staff on the design and fabrication of various apparatus such as mechanical, agricultural, electro-mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electronic apparatus; determine choice of materials, etc.;
Following general description of functions from engineers or scientists, independently design complete systems, peripherals for existing systems, or modifications to existing equipment; design computer programs to control, acquire, store, and display data; design analog and/or digital interface(s); perform skilled and precision machine tool work constructing instruments and systems;
Estimates equipment needs for shop; evaluate and recommend the purchase, fabrication and/or modification of equipment;
Installs and test fabricated equipment for proper operation; adjust and calibrate; troubleshoot and repair equipment malfunction(s) to system, board, or component level, including using diagnostic software; prepare written documentation;
Assist investigators or scientists in the design or setup of experiments and the acquisition of data;
Develops and maintains a preventive maintenance program;
Determines work priorities, estimate material requirements, maintain inventories and evaluation of equipment needs;
Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
One year of experience as an Engineering Technician 2
OR
Five years of experience as an engineering technician
Equivalent education/experience.
