Class Series Concept
Definition
Administer a program unit within the institution's radiation safety office, such as preview and authorization, compliance inspections, or dosimetry. Recommend changes and improvements to existing programs.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general direction develop and implement radiation safety programs. Modify program to reflect changes in regulations and independent recognition of hazards. Prepare and review proposals for radiation use authorization, policy changes and license amendments to be submitted to the radiation safety committee. Assume responsibility in emergency situations involving radiation hazards.
Typical Work
Present applications for use of radiation to the Radiation Safety Committee, develop restrictions and conditions, review and monitor authorization procedures;
Maintain radiation inventory; develop computer programs to maintain records;
Administer laboratory surveys and internal dosimetry programs;
Inspect analytical X-ray, receipt and delivery of radioactive material;
Investigate accidents;
Coordinate radioactive waste and/or instrument calibration program(s);
Conduct lectures and demonstrations; prepare training material;
May lead assigned personnel;
May perform duties of Health Physicist I;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in science or engineering and three years of professional experience in a radiation safety program, OR a Master's Degree in radiological sciences and one year of professional experience in a radiation safety program.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
