Definition

Perform complex high precision work by setting up and operating precision manual and/or computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine tools such as lathes, mills, jig borers, horizontal boring mill, grinders, and drill presses to fabricate parts for research, academic and medical purposes.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision, perform limited design and project coordination duties of part fabrication such as designing basic jigs and fixtures, determining set-up and machine settings for manufacturing parts, and troubleshooting and repairing mechanical equipment.

Typical Work

Confer with professors, scientists, physicians, and engineers on design and development of instruments and specialized equipment for research and academic use; 

Work from computer-aided design (CAD), blueprints, sketches, diagrams, written and oral instructions; suggest design or material changes when alternate configurations appear appropriate; 

Write computer numerical control programs using conversational programming language at the machine control or off-line at a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system to fabricate parts for research, academic and medical purposes; 

Plan and lay out work, design jigs and fixtures, determine material and fabrication methods to be used, if not explicitly specified; calculate sizes, dimensional relationship or parts, working tolerances, and set up and determine machine tool settings; 

Set up and run CNC machine tools and make adjustments as required to fabricate parts; 

Construct or machine parts from standard and exotic metals and alloys, plastics, wood, rubber, ceramic, etc.;  

Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment or machine tools, perform basic repairs, and solve complex mechanical problems; 

Produce or modify CAD drawings; 

Perform advanced welding using Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) processes along with heat-treating processes including welding of ferrous and non ferrous alloys and shield metal arc welding techniques, and brazing, soldering and heat treating of a wide variety of metals;

Perform close tolerance sheet metal work;

Perform duties of Instrument Maker I; 

Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience as an Instrument Maker 1 

OR 

equivalent education/experience.
