Supervise instrument makers, helpers and other assigned personnel. Direct shop and laboratory activities and perform highly complex, high precision work by setting up and operating precision manual and/or computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine tools such as lathes, mills, jig borers, horizontal boring mill, grinders, and drill presses, to fabricate parts for research, academic and medical purposes.  Resolve highly complex design and manufacturing problems such as performing design work from verbal or minimal written instructions to manufacture mechanical devices; determining tolerances and fits on mechanical designs; performing advanced jig and fixture design and construction; and diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing and rebuilding machine tools and/or mechanical devices.

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action.

Supervise personnel engaged in construction and manufacture of special purpose instruments and delicate laboratory equipment for research, academic, and medical purposes; 

Consult with professors, scientists, physicians, and engineers on design of instruments and experimental research equipment; recommend design modifications; 

Establish work schedule, machinery and space utilization; inspect work in progress and assure that standards of quality are met; 

Develop and direct preventive maintenance program on research facilities, instruments, machine tools, and specialized equipment; 

Order materials and tools; maintain an adequate inventory of required supplies to support operation; contact vendors on major equipment purchases and coordinate services with other campus and outside shops; 

Assist in formation of departmental budget keep shop records, and write reports when required; 

Enforce safety rules and maintain control of shop and laboratory activities according to established procedures; 

Perform the work of Instrument Maker III;  

Perform related duties as required.

One year of experience as an Instrument Maker Lead 

OR 

equivalent education/experience.
