Definition
Collects and processes marine and hydrographic data; performs routine preparation of specimens; performs routine analysis of data; operates and maintains associated scientific equipment.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this class are distinguished by the requirement for assisting scientists in conduct of marine research and laboratory experiments in the laboratory, on land, or at sea.
Typical Work
Performs routine analyses of sea water for salinity, oxygen, and nutrient content and marine sediment;
Performs methods, techniques, and equipment procedures for analysis of samples and raw data processing; records and transcribes scientific data from sensing and recording instruments;
Collects fishes and other marine life by means of beach seine, town-net, push-trawl, dip net, bottom trawl, and maintains such equipment; assists and instructs students as required in operation of equipment;
Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Fisheries, Marine Biology, Oceanography, or other related biological science, or equivalent experience and course work; skill in handling a small boat and field collecting gear.
