Definition

Directs technicians, or performs as a senior technician, in collecting and processing of marine and hydrographic data; prepares specimens; analyzes data; operates and maintains associated scientific equipment. 

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are distinguished by assignment as a senior marine technician involved in marine research and laboratory activities on land or at sea; may lead assigned marine biology technicians.

Typical Work

Directs or works with assigned personnel in conduct of activities in support of various research projects; performs all duties as performed by the Marine Biology Technician I; 

Participates and supervises data gathering at sea, utilizing instruments and equipment such as spectrophotometers, microscopes, radiation counters, centrifuges, culture apparatus, photographic equipment, and balances; 

Analyzes data for oxygen content, phosphate, nitrate, and other chemical content; reads and records water temperatures by appropriate means; reads and records underwater light measurements; records depth soundings; obtains bottom samples from water bodies; operates small boats in absence of regular operators; operates weather recording equipment; 

Prepares and keeps accurate records of data obtained in the field and in the laboratory; 

Conducts inventory and orders necessary materials and equipment; 

Plans and executes field work as required; 

Plans and executes laboratory work; 

Operates and maintains scientific data sensing, recording, and analytic equipment; 

Designs, manufactures, calibrates, and tests equipment used in biological, oceanography sampling; 

Evaluates instrument performance; 

Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor of Science in Fisheries, Marine Biology, Oceanography, or other equivalent science, or experience equivalent to course work required for the degree; ability to operate a small boat; and one year of experience as a Marine Biologist or equivalent experience/additional training.
