Class Series Concept

Diagnose malfunctions, maintain, repair, install, test, develop and fabricate optical devices, systems and ancillary equipment used in health care facilities, teaching and research laboratories.  Provide technical support to health care professionals, clinicians, technologists and instructors.

Definition

Perform entry-level optical work troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, and testing a variety of optical devices or systems used in health care facilities and research laboratories.  Perform electronics troubleshooting or electrical safety testing as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under direct supervision, receive on the job training and perform routine troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, installation, assembly and testing activities such as cleaning and alignment of lens systems in microscopes, repairing and replacing parts in photo microscopes, function and safety testing opthalmoscopes/otoscopes.

Typical Work

Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and tests optical equipment such as microscopes, refractometers, eye function test equipment, opthalmoscopes/otoscopes used in patient diagnosis and research; 

Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and tests basic photographic and/or audio-visual equipment; 

Performs preventive maintenance and electrical safety inspections on microscopes; tests, adjusts and aligns; documents maintenance according to regulatory guidelines; 

Troubleshoots and repairs basic electronic circuits within optical devices; 

Assists senior-level technicians in the repair of optical systems;

Uses proper biohazard (e.g. bloodborne pathogen) and radiation (e.g. x-ray and isotope) practices while performing duties in areas where contaminants may be present; 

Confers with faculty, staff, vendors, and/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requests; 

Orders, stocks, and tracks optical replacement parts;  

Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of school (military, trade school, or college) studying optical systems or one year of demonstrated work experience on optical systems 

OR 

equivalent education/experience.
