Definition
Perform journey-level optical work troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, constructing basic optical devices, systems and ancillary equipment used in health care facilities, teaching and research laboratories. Work from service documentation, diagrams, verbal instructions and regulatory codes. Provide technical assistance to health care professionals, clinicians and technologists and instructors.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general supervision, independently perform a variety of troubleshooting, repair, construction, installation, testing and maintenance activities on a variety of optical devices, systems and ancillary equipment ranging from routine to complex and used in patient care, clinical and research laboratories.
Typical Work
Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains a variety of microscopes ranging from simple binocular to complex photo-microscopes, multi-head microscopes, copolscopes, surgical microscopes, fluorescence and phase contrast microscopes, clinical diagnosis and treatment equipment such as phoropters, indirect opthalmoscopes, lensometers and endoscopes;
Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains fiber-optic light sources, opthalmoscopes/otoscopes, refractometers and other optical equipment used in direct patient care;
Troubleshoots and repairs electronic circuits within optical devices;
Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and tests photographic equipment and audio-visual equipment;
Designs and constructs basic optical systems;
Performs preventive maintenance on patient care and clinical laboratory equipment; tests, diagnoses, adjusts and calibrates to local, state, and other regulatory codes; advises health care professionals and administrators on compliance of equipment with fire and safety codes and modifies equipment to satisfy these requirements; documents according to regulatory guidelines; performs electrical safety testing;
Confers with faculty, staff, clients, coworkers, vendors and/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requests;
Develops inventory list and places orders for repair parts;
May create and maintain database files for inventory;
May repair malfunctioning operating room equipment during emergent situations;
May work in areas requiring knowledge of biohazard and radiation protection;
Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years of experience as an Optical Technician 1

Equivalent education/experience.
