RADIATION SAFETY TECHNICIAN 1
Class Series Concept
Monitor, survey, and inspect campus radiation use areas as required by state and federal regulations. Provide service support in the control and manage¬ment of radioactive materials and radioactive waste and calibration of radia¬tion instruments.
Definition
Perform routine technical duties that support radiation safety in research and clinical laboratories on campus.
Distinguishing Characteristics
First level class of series. Under direct supervision perform routine techni¬cal duties such as interpreting a variety of radiation instrument readings to record results of surveys and to recognize radiation hazards.
Typical Work
Survey radioisotope laboratories for contamination by wipe methods and instru¬ments;
Count survey samples in laboratory instruments;
Record all survey results and initiate action when established limits are exceeded;
Check radiation survey instruments for proper operation;
Perform simple calibration of radiation instruments;
Receive and deliver radioactive material for campus use;
Collect and process radioactive waste;
Assist in collection and distribution of film badge and personnel dosimeters;
Assist health physicist with surveys of X-ray equipment;
Maintain files and records of program activities;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years of college course work in science, math, or engineering; OR trade school graduation in radiation/health related field; OR two years of related work experience.
