FOREST CRUISER & CRAFTS TECHNICIAN 1
Definition
Performs skilled forest crafts work, conducts logging operations, or operates equipment in the construction or maintenance of forest facilities, trails and roads, and in forest management or forest protection activities.
Distinguishing Characteristics
These positions are specialized in logging and/or heavy equipment operations. Positions also perform semi-skilled carpentry, masonry, painting, metal craft or other craft work in the construction or maintenance of flumes, bridges, roads, trails, and other forest structures.
Typical Work
Operates a power saw falling large trees (over 24" DBH) and snags;
Operates equipment including heavy trucks (10‑yard dump and equipment transport), motor grader, back‑hoe, bulldozer (D‑6 or smaller), loader and related equipment;
Builds and repairs forest roads, bridges, facilities and structures, operating and using chain saw, carpentry, masonry, painting and metal‑craft hand tools and related equipment;
Fall, buck, trim, and load trees and logs;
Maintains buildings and grounds including student quarters, class and meeting rooms, garage and shops;
Supervises a fire suppression, planting, thinning, intensive management, road, trail or facility construction and maintenance labor crew; supervises the mixing and application of sensitive herbicides and pesticides;
Conducts training;
Fights forest fires; inspects equipment, buildings, and remote areas for fire safety;
Lubricates and maintains equipment; sharpens and repairs tools;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: standards, practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in forest management practices, road and facility construction and maintenance, carpentry, masonry, painting and metal‑craft; supervisory techniques.
Ability to: operate heavy equipment efficiently and effectively; fall large trees and snags; use hand and power tools with reasonable degree of skill; work safely; effectively communicate, train and supervise.

Desirable Qualifications
One year of experience as a timber faller or forestry equipment operator.
