Definition
Under close supervision, performs basic fish hatchery duties. In a learning capacity performs and assists in technical, scientific and maintenance functions.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the first level of the series, positions develop knowledge and skills by performing tasks such as collecting adult fish by hook and line, seining, and volunteer or non-volunteer fish trap; assisting in spawning fish; assisting in scanning fish for various tags.
Typical Work
Assists in spawning fish;
Assists in identifying all targeted and non-targeted species, gender, stock origin and condition of maturity when trapping and spawning adults;
Clips the fins of fish as part of a marking program;
Assists in scanning fish for various tags using coded wire tag wands, pit tag detectors, and other tag-associated equipment;
Assists in maintaining proper water flow and rearing environments;
Performs grounds care and maintenance; repairs equipment and facilities;
Provides security for a facility during spawning season;
Washes and cleans ponds, water intakes, fish holding tanks, spawning troughs, and egg trays;
Drives truck to deliver supplies and equipment;
Assists in preparing and mixing fish food; feeds fish as directed;
Assists in taking and recording data;
Assists in preparing and administering chemicals and drugs to combat disease;
Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: proficient use of computers and software methods and equipment used for grounds maintenance, confined space regulations and hazards and other required safety regulations and requirements.
Ability to: work outdoors in all weather conditions, perform strenuous physical tasks, follow instructions and complete assigned tasks, use sound judgment, develop knowledge of fish species and gender identification.
Legal Requirement(s)
Some positions require a valid driver’s license.
There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
High School graduation or GED.
