Definition

Serves as staff physician in institution.

Typical Work

Examines patients and diagnoses their illnesses; prescribes and administers routine medical treatment; refers difficult and complex cases to another physician and assists in further examination, diagnosis, and treatment of such cases,

Performs minor, and assists in major, surgical operations and autopsies; orders and interprets laboratory examinations, analyses, and X rays; writes prescriptions; makes rounds of wards and reports on condition and progress of patients;

Assists in instructing and supervising nurses, technicians, and personnel assigned for special training; attends and participates in clinics and staff conferences on surgical, medical and mental conditions of various patients and their diagnosis and treatment,

Prepares case histories, reports, and related correspondence;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: methods and principles of general medicine and surgery; methods of diagnosing and treating more common mental disorders; hospital organization and procedures social work, and rehabilitation therapies.

Ability to examine diagnose, and treat physical and simple mental diseases and deficiencies, perform minor surgery; interpret autopsy findings; laboratory analyses, and X-rays. Supervise ward personnel; prepare comprehensive case histories.

Legal Requirement(s)

A valid license to practice medicine and surgery in the State of Washington.
