Definition

Participates in medical treatment of patients, directs medical program for unit or section

 OR

In a staff position acts as medical consultant in a medical service program; 

OR 

Within a Division of Developmental Disabilities residential facility provides medical and surgical services to one or more assigned program units as a professional member of an interdisciplinary team.

Typical Work

Directs medical program of institution; instructs, supervises, and evaluates work of physicians, nurses, and allied personnel; 

Participates in staff conferences on overall institution programs and policies; 

Examines and diagnoses patients, prescribes and administers medical treatment; orders and interprets laboratory analyses and X‑rays; performs and assists at major and minor surgery; 

Refers difficult and complex cases to a higher level physician or specialist, and assists in further examination, diagnosis, and treatment of such cases; 

Diagnoses and refers patients needing specialist counseling; prepares case histories and findings for specialists; participates in follow up on diagnoses and treatments prescribed by specialist; 

Consults with staff on medical status of patients; coordinates medical treatment with institution programs; 

Makes and records routine physical and psychiatric examinations; keeps or directs keeping of case records; prepares reports and correspondence; 

Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team in one or more program units; 

May supervise lower level staff; 

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  methods and principles of medicine and surgery, hospital organization and procedure.

Ability to: examine for, diagnose and treat physical and mental illness; interpret autopsy findings; laboratory analyses and X‑rays; select, instruct and supervise medical and nursing staff; develop and organize comprehensive medical program.

Legal Requirement(s)

A valid license to practice medicine and surgery in the State of Washington.

 

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Valid license to practice medicine and surgery in State of Washington

AND

 Four years of experience in practice of medicine.

Equivalent education/experience.
