Definition
Plan, direct, and supervise the activities of a major functional unit in the physical plant maintenance department.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions allocated to this class are responsible for supervising a department such as campus repair, preventative maintenance, residence hall maintenance, housing maintenance, etc. Such positions normally report to a Maintenance Superintendent, or equivalent, and are found at the largest institutions. Responsibility includes supervision over trades or maintenance supervisors.
Typical Work
Plan installation and repairs; direct trades/maintenance supervisors engaged in maintenance of buildings and utility systems;
Estimate costs of maintenance, renovation, remodeling, or alteration projects; inspect and coordinate work of contractors to ensure conformance with local standards and codes;
Review budget request of shop supervisors in developing a departmental budget prior to submission to the Maintenance Superintendent;
Develop specifications for, and approve purchase of, supplies, equipment, and materials required by the department;
Assist in the development of departmental procedures and policies; carry out the administrative policy established by the maintenance Superintendent;
Interview, hire, train, and discipline shop personnel;
Perform related duties as required.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
Journey status as a tradesworker in one of the recognized fields such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, or sheet metal; five years of work experience as a journey tradesworker, two of which must be in a lead or supervisory capacity.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
