Definition
Direct and supervise the buildings and grounds maintenance program at a community college campus or university research facility.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this class report directly to an administrative superior who is removed from day-to-day buildings and grounds activities. Only one Buildings and Grounds Supervisor will usually be found at each college campus or university research center. Employee staff will typically include custodians and groundskeepers for "A" level, journey trades workers/engineers and lead custodians for the "B" level, and lead trades workers and specialists for the "C" level. Size of campus facilities is a primary criteria for level.

Typical Work
Plan and supervise personnel involved in custodial, grounds care, and building and equipment maintenance, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and heating;
Estimate cost of maintenance, renovation, remodeling for minor building projects; assist institution administration in obtaining contract or quotes;
Develop departmental procedures and policies; prepare departmental budget request;
Interview, select, and train departmental employees; recommend promotion and discipline;
Inspect buildings and grounds to determine maintenance required;
Develop specifications for equipment purchased or services contracted; work with contractors on campus building projects and equipment purchases;
Order supplies, equipment, and materials required by the buildings, grounds, and custodial departments;
Maintain records; write reports as required;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Four years of applicable work experience as a trades worker and power plant engineer including two years at the lead or supervisory level.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
