Definition

This is the supervisory or expert level of the series. Supervises the Photogrammetric Mapping section of the Department of Natural Resources or the Department of Transportation.

Typical Work

Supervise photogrammetrists and other technical staff engaged in production of aerotriangulation, topographic and planimetric maps/data for Highway or Natural Resource Engineering, orthophoto production, digital terrain modelling, earthwork calculations, photogrammetric surveys, and GIS data development; 

Assign work, trains, counsels, and evaluates employees; recruits, interviews, tests, and recommends hiring of new employees; recommends corrective action and approves leave; 

Establishes unit goals, objectives, and develops action plans; develop and negotiate production schedules and establishes priorities; 

Develop, recommend, and implement policies and procedures for application of digital and conventional photogrammetric mapping; 

Assist in the development and tracking of biennial operating budget for the photogrammetry unit; 

Manage capital assets (photogrammetric instruments, computers, software, peripherals) including: negotiation and administration of software and hardware maintenance contracts; instrument repairs and alterations; software and hardware upgrades; instrument and computer acquisition and replacement; 

Represent the unit/section/agency on various interagency and intra-agency coordinating committees or task forces involving aerial photo or photogrammetric applications; 

Coordinate with Department engineers, scientists, managers, and representatives of other federal, state, local agencies, private contractors and industry representatives regarding design, planning, scheduling, and implementation of photogrammetric projects; 

Assist Attorney General and serve as expert witness on aerial photographic and photogrammetric products/data/services; provide oral depositions, written affidavits, and court testimony in support of agency; produce aerial photographic or photogrammetric exhibits for use in court litigations; 

Provide counsel, guidance, and assistance to Department engineers and scientists, representatives of other state, federal or local agencies, civic groups, private firms, and the general public on aerial photo and photogrammetric matters; 

May operate any and all photogrammetric instruments; 

May supervise lower level staff.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.   

All positions require the ability to see stereoscopically and normal color perception.


Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Positions typically require four years of experience performing professional photogrammetric tasks as a senior-level or project lead photogrammetrist.
