Definition
Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Lead assigned Automotive Mechanics in performance of journey-level work in the repair and service of automobiles, vans/panel trucks, pickup trucks or motorized farm equipment, under 15,000 GVW, or related equipment such as power generators, hydraulic systems and diesel engines: OR have full responsibility for a small automotive repair shop and/or motor pool.
Typical Work
Evaluate automotive equipment repair requirements; estimate repair costs;
Keep automotive records; purchase parts and supplies; schedule all vehicles for servicing; obtain estimate for damaged automobiles; perform body and fender repair;
Write repair orders, assign work and verify work; record time and parts used on jobs;
Perform the duties of Automotive Mechanic;
Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of automotive mechanic trade; principles of operation of internal combustion engines; use of automotive testing and diagnostic equipment; safety practices.
Ability to: inspect, diagnose trouble, adjust, maintain, and repair automotive, farm, and construction equipment; estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs; use hand and power tools; weld and braze.

One year of full-time experience as a Automotive Mechanic, or equivalent.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
