REFRIGERATION MECHANIC LEAD

Definition

Lead journey refrigeration mechanics in the maintenance, installation, and repair of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, including sophisticated types of laboratory and experimental refrigeration equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are distinguished by responsibility to lead journey refrigeration mechanics on a project or job location, to instruct other assigned workers, to correct and specify methods, and to perform skilled refrigeration mechanic work.

Typical Work

Perform all duties of a refrigeration mechanic; lead assigned personnel;

Develop and maintain a schedule of preventative maintenance;

Assign maintenance and repair work of journey refrigeration mechanics and assist in troubleshooting special problems;

Maintain a list of refrigeration equipment as to location and type; keep shop and repair manuals up to date;

Order parts and materials as necessary to carry out repair and maintenance work;

Prepare estimates of repair work as requested, and keep records of repair work performed to facilitate future work and methods of maintenance;

Design repair modifications to improve operation of equipment or to replace obsolete parts;

Inspect and write complaint reports to defective equipment under contractor’s warranty;

May perform work in other trades;

Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in refrigeration work; principles of operation of refrigeration systems; occupational hazards and safety practices of refrigeration trade.

Ability to: diagnose troubles and make necessary adjustments or repairs; estimate time and materials; use hand and power tools; weld and solder.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

One year, full-time experience as a journey refrigeration mechanic or equivalent trade skill.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
