Definition

Supervises duties and activities of occupational nurse consultants in Labor and Industries' Industrial Insurance program.

Typical Work

Under the direction of the Medical Director, directs and evaluates the work of occupational nurse consultants including the determination of injured worker's need for health care; 

Instructs occupational nurse consultants in their consultative functioning within the claims units of the department; 

Assists claims staff and others in the utilization of the occupational nurse consultants in planning for the health care needs of all injured workers; 

Investigates complaints of inadequate medical care, violations of contracts with Industrial Insurance providers; 

Supervises maintenance of records, reports and correspondence; directs and organizes workload of staff and submits reports of unit activities;  

Directs and evaluates the work of occupational nurse consultants in the study of new methods of treatment in determining the most effective treatment or therapy for injured workers; 

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  administrative and supervisory skills; medical aid rules and policies under the State's Industrial Insurance program; nursing administration; psychology; community and related resources.   

Ability to:  analyze and resolve special problems and make sound and practical recommendations; teach and instruct others in fundamentals of industrial insurance program; analyze research data and utilize findings; coordinate skills and competency of staff with emphasis on improving departmental program; act as representative of department and function independently; establish and maintain effective relationships with professional groups, agencies, and persons; prepare reports; demonstrate effective communication skills; maintain and operate automobile.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience as an Occupational Nurse Consultant.

OR 

A valid Washington State license to practice as a registered professional nurse and three years of clinical or functional nursing experience and four years of consultative, administrative or supervisory experience over registered nursing staff or other health care professionals.  

A Bachelor's degree will substitute for two years of administrative, consultative or supervisory experience.   

A Master's degree in a health care field will substitute for one year of nursing experience.
