This is the journey level of the series. Perform a variety of assignments in general farming work which may include agricultural research programs, milking and maintaining a dairy herd, assisting in the care and management of livestock, or operating a variety of light, medium, and heavy farm equipment. Work is typically reviewed on a spot check basis after decisions have been made. Unusual problems that may occur are brought to a higher level supervisor with probable outcomes and solutions.  May supervise and train lower seasonal laborers or farm workers.

Drives tractors, trucks, and other farm implements incidental to general farm work; or performs minor repairs and construction of equipment and buildings;

Plants, transplants, labels, irrigates, weeds, fertilizes, records, and performs related duties to produce and process seed and forage, horticultural, and other crops;

Performs work involving the care and feeding of poultry and the incubation and hatching of the eggs; arranges trap nesting, gathers, cleans, and packs eggs; slaughters, plucks, weighs, and cleans birds for marketing with the assistance of helpers;

Builds and mends fences, pens, and feeding devices; performs rough carpentry and painting;

Maintains field operations records and assists in the collection of data;

From information supplied by research personnel, computes proper quantities of chemicals and seed for research plots; mixes and applies chemicals; or estimates feed requirements and weighs and mixes feed;

Performs a variety of skilled duties such as the planting, care, and harvesting of experimental crops in a field plot or green house; grafts and prunes fruit crops; processes and stores seeds and other materials; or the incubation, hatching, and rearing of poultry;

Milk cows either by hand or machine; sanitizes the milking apparatus and system; cleans the milking area and holding pen; grooms and washes cows and inspects for evidence of injury or disease; feeds concentrate including experimental rations; records milking and other management and research information on individual cows;

Operates farm equipment such as tractors, bulldozers, back hoes, trucks, harrows, cultivators, seeders, drills, combines, mowing machines, rakes, hay bailers, forage choppers, cutters and loaders, and silo fillers;

Hauls feed, hay, straw, grain, ensilage, manure, etc., in various farm equipment;

May construct and repair fences, fixtures, and other farm structures;

Two years of experience in farm work or maintaining livestock. College or vocational training in agriculture may be substituted for the work experience. Some positions require six months' experience in milking.
