Definition
This is the supervisory or expert level of the series. Supervises assigned personnel and performs a variety of assignments in general farming work which may include, supervising the care and maintenance of a livestock herd, managing a major farm, orchard or animal operation of an agricultural research or teaching center.
Typical Work
Supervises assistants and performs activities in the feeding, breeding, management, and general care of livestock including research and teaching functions;
Participates in the development and planning of research studies; conducts experiments;
Coordinates and supervises a general farm, animal, or orchard operation including planting, cultivating, irrigating, spraying, animal care, and harvesting and disposal of crops and livestock;
Observe animals for symptoms indicating disease, for reproductive phenomena such as estrus, approaching partuition, or other behavioral phenomena; administer prescribed treatment for minor ailments and injuries;
Assigns, schedules, and supervises farm workers, milkers, equipment operators, heardsmanagers, and seasonal farm laborers to ensure efficient accomplishment of research and teaching objectives;
Trim feet, dehorn, castrate, dock, mark, remove teeth, halter break, break to ride, and otherwise handle and train animals;
Assign farm equipment; inspect equipment and machinery, coordinate preventative maintenance and make emergency mechanical repairs;
Maintains work, time, and cost records; assists in the collection of research data, observations, etc., and provides summaries or reports;
Directs the feeding, weighing, bedding, and care of livestock herds and facilities;
May supervise lower level staff.
