AIRCRAFT MECHANIC SUPERVISOR

Definition

Develops an aviation maintenance and repair program for an agency or supervises aircraft mechanics, plans and schedules aircraft and/or helicopter periodic maintenance. Responsible for aircraft and/or helicopter equipment and parts specifications development, purchase and contractual agreements and departmental compliance to the Federal Aviation Administration regulations for safe maintenance for aircraft. May provide operational and maintenance training in aircraft systems for all pilots.

Typical Work

Plans, directs and inspects the work of and trains aircraft mechanics in repair, maintenance, and inspection of aircraft;

Establishes maintenance and inspection schedules;

Coordinates the ordering of parts, supplies and materials necessary to maintain and repair aircraft;

Responsible for shop and facilities maintenance;

Performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of airframes and engines;

Develops budget projections for aircraft maintenance and expansion; monitors biennial allotments and expenditures;

Departmental liaison with Federal agencies regarding aircraft maintenance, inspections, equipment;

Responsible for the manuals, log books, parts books, inventory system to be current and in compliance with regulations;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: principles and practices of management, cost analysis, budget; Federal regulations for aircraft safety, repairs, maintenance, and documentation; principles of effective supervision; use of aircraft testing and diagnostic equipment; safe practices.

Ability to: plan, direct, and coordinate the aircraft maintenance program for the agency; inspect, diagnose trouble, adjust, maintain and repair aircraft; use hand and power tools; keep accurate records; determine maintenance needs from records and aircraft inspection; coordinate, schedule, direct, inspect and train aircraft mechanics.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in aviation management, business management or related field.

AND

Four years of experience as a journey level, federally licensed airframe and power plant mechanic including two years experience supervising aircraft mechanics. Some positions must have two years performing unscheduled helicopter maintenance, including troubleshooting and systems installation. Must possess a current FAA Airframe and Power Plant License or FAA Aviation Maintenance Technician License with current FAA inspection authorization.

Additional qualifying experience will substitute, year for year, for education.
