Definition
Directs and coordinates therapy programs in mental hospital or rehabilitation center.
Typical Work
Plans and administers coordinated master schedule of activity and rehabilitation therapies ensuring that each patient receives comprehensive but prescribed treatment, including occupational, physical, recreational, music, and industrial therapy;
Under direction of clinical director, develops medically approved plans and policies which will meet needs, capabilities, and interests of patients referred;
Works with staff members in coordinating therapy programs with other programs such as nursing, social work, and psychology;
Directs in-service training programs in activity therapies for staff, college students, volunteer workers, and employees;
Supervises staff consisting of occupational, physical, recreational, music, and industrial therapists, volunteer workers, and library employees;
Reviews, revises if necessary, and coordinates budget estimates, reports, and records prior to submission to clinical director or superintendent;
Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: physiology; psychology; sociology; problems of mentally and physically ill; rehabilitative therapy; administration; educational methods.
Ability to: supervise therapists and volunteer workers; maintain effective patient therapy; establish effective working relationships with other departmental personnel; speak and write well.

Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree involving major study in occupational therapy, physical therapy, hospital recreation, manual arts, vocational counseling, or psychiatric social work.
AND
Five years of professional experience in a therapy program, including two years in administration and direction of professional staff.
A Master's degree in areas of study listed above will substitute for two years of non-administrative experience.
NOTE: Occupational therapy majors must possess registration with the National Registry of Occupational Therapy; physical therapy majors must possess a certificate of registration issued upon the recommendation of the Washington State Examining Committee of Physical Therapists.
