Definition
Positions in this level work under general supervision, performing skilled gardening work in the maintenance of grounds, landscapes, nurseries, and/or greenhouses. Positions instruct the work of others, including students, residents, inmates, or patients as temporarily or regularly assigned to gardening.
Typical Work
Prepares soil for planting;
Plants, transplants, trims, and waters plants, trees, flowers and shrubs;
Applies pesticides and herbicides to flowers and shrubs;
Seeds, mows, irrigates, fertilizes and maintains lawns;
Uses a variety of manual tools and equipment, such as rakes, pruning shears, hand edger’s, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows and pesticide sprayers;
Operates power and motorized equipment such as weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, rototillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, small trucks, lawn mowers, sweepers, aerators, sod cutters and snow blowers;
Cleans, services and makes repairs to tools and equipment;
May supervise lower level staff.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
Positions typically require the ability to do required work, and one year of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation.
