NATURAL RESOURCE ENGINEER 2
Definition
Performs independent forest engineering work in office or field, designing forest transportation and harvesting systems and administering construction/maintenance contracts.
Typical Work
Gathers data and contributes to the planning for timber sales, reforestation and other projects;
Prepares timber sales areas for cruising and cruises timber areas;
Enforces forestry laws and regulations;
Supervises and trains seasonal and permanent crew to perform semi-skilled and skilled technical work;
Directs crew and equipment for initial action on forest and range fires;
Supervises an engineering crew gathering field data and locating property lines, boundaries, roads, bridges, buildings, recreation facilities, drainage systems, utilities systems and other improvements;
Takes elevations, computes distances, profiles and quantities; designs, prepares working drawing and contract specifications for forest engineering construction work;
Performs contract compliance inspections;
Prepares work plans and reports;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: principles, practices and application techniques, skills of forest engineering and forest management; practices and techniques of logging, forest access road and primitive area construction; engineering instruments, geometry, calculus and engineering formulas; soils; construction materials; fire prevention and control.
Ability to: make sound and independent decisions relating to engineering and forest management problems; understand, interpret and create written, oral and graphic directions, maps, plans, drawings and specifications; enforce laws, regulations, specifications and contracts; maintain favorable public relations; train and supervise subordinate personnel; withstand long hours and inclement weather, hazardous fire situations and other conditions requiring vigor and strength.

Desirable Qualifications
One year as a Natural Resource Engineer 1.
OR
A Bachelor's degree in Forest Engineering and, subsequent to graduation, two years of engineering experience in harvest system design, forest transportation system design, or forest road construction/maintenance contract administration. The following substitutions may be made for the education and experience requirements in this option:
- Registration as an Engineer-in-Training will substitute for education;
- Registration as a professional engineer in the State of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington will substitute for either the education or experience requirements;
- Registration as a professional engineer in the branch of logging engineering in the State of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington will substitute for both the education and experience requirements.
NOTE: Requirements for professional registration as an engineer in the State of Washington are eight years of professional experience (which may include up to four years of college-level engineering education) and successful completion of sixteen hours of professional licensing exams. Applicants qualifying through the licensing equivalency option must achieve professional registration as an engineer in the State of Washington within six months of appointment to this class.
