Definition
This is the supervisory or expert level. Positions in this class supervise locksmiths and/or trade helpers working in locking system maintenance and repair and perform skilled locksmith work.
Typical Work
Supervises full-time journey and/or lead workers in construction, alteration, and/or repair of locking devices, digital locks, key systems and related buildings and facilities hardware and software;
Reads plans and blueprints; inspects projects to ensure compliance with local codes; determines scope of work, materials needed, and their cost and availability;
Orders materials and maintains an adequate inventory of required materials to carry on shop of maintenance work;
Selects, trains, and evaluates employees; participates in employee discipline;
Assists in the development of the departmental budget;
Develops and conducts preventative maintenance programs on buildings and facilities;
Acts as liaison between and works with contractors for specifics on keying for contract work performed on remodels and new construction;
Enforces safety rules and regulations; maintains records on work performed; writes reports as required;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of locksmith trade; types, functions, and operations of lock sets; key blanks; safety precautions; record keeping.
Ability to: repair, install and construct locks and locking devices; make keys; estimate materials and personnel needed to complete project; supervise crew of locksmiths or helpers.

Desirable Qualifications
Positions typically require. Two years' full-time experience as a journey locksmith, or equivalent trades skill, including one year full-time experience as a locksmith lead, or equivalent. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
