PHYSICAL THERAPIST SPECIALIST
Definition
Provides physical therapy services to patients in a specialty service; coordinates clinical activities and student affiliation programs within a physical therapy division.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general direction, coordinates a specialty service program and provides assessment and/or treatment in areas such as pediatrics and neonatology, burn or brain injury patients, cardiac rehabilitation, or hand therapy; coordinates student affiliation programs in specialty service; provides inservice programs and/or community training programs in clinical specialty area(s).
Typical Work
Performs the work of Physical Therapist 3;
Performs complex assessments in specialty service and recommends appropriate treatment plans;
Directs the work of staff assigned to specialty service;
Ensures procedures and standards are met for services provided in specialty; monitors quality assurance activities;
Develops and submits budget requests for program specialty; complies with budget restrictions;
Coordinates student physical therapy affiliation; trains students and evaluates their progress;
Develops and presents inservices to students and staff and to community groups in specialty area;
Participates in clinical studies for the specialty;
Performs related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)
Current Washington State license to practice as a Physical Therapist

Desirable Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited Physical Therapy Program
AND
2½ years of experience in the practice of physical therapy
AND
Completion of applicable training or education in the specialty service;
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
