MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER CLINICAL SPECIALIST

Definition

Provide treatment, participate in data collection and research, and perform case management functions for a clinical specialty area such as geriatrics, children, disabled, ethnic minorities, or eating disorders.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision, provide specialized mental health services for a clinical specialty area.

Typical Work

Provide specialized mental health services in a clinical specialty area; 

Provide consultation to other Mental Health Practitioners in clinical specialty area; 

In the specialty area, assist in the development of training programs and provide training for other Mental Health Practitioners; 

Perform Mental Health Practitioner duties; 

May provide direction to other Mental Health Practitioners, volunteers, or students; 

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

A Master's Degree in behavioral sciences, such as psychology, psychiatric nursing, occupational therapy, vocational or educational counseling, or social work 

AND 

Two years as a Mental Health Practitioner or equivalent, one of which must be in a clinical specialty area. Eligibility for recognition by the State of Washington as a clinical specialist, under the community mental health regulations may be required. May be required to be eligible for a clinical faculty appointment. 

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/ certification/registration.
