Supervises plumbers, pipe fitters and/or steamfitters and performs skilled plumbing, pipe fitting and/or steamfitting work;
OR

Directs a crew of incarcerated individuals of correctional institutions and performs skilled plumbing, pipe fitting and/or steamfitting work.

In the Department of Corrections, positions at this level directing a crew of incarcerated individuals either are limited to two positions per institution or must direct crews consisting of three or more incarcerated individuals.

Positions performing plumbing, steamfitting or pipe fitting work as defined under WAC 296-400A-005 (to include potable water systems, liquid waste systems, and medical gas piping systems within the footprint of a building) require proper plumber certification unless meeting an exemption under RCW 18.106.150.

Plans, lays out, directs and inspects work of crew of plumbers, pipe fitters, and/or steamfitters and helpers or crew of incarcerated individuals engaged in installation, maintenance and repair of steam systems and equipment such as boilers, pipes, radiators, pumps, traps, valves, and laundry and kitchen equipment;

Keeps records; makes reports;

Plans, lays out, directs and inspects work of crew of plumbers and helpers or crew of incarcerated individuals engaged in installing, maintaining and repairing water, refrigeration and sewage systems;

Recommends repairs and consults with supervisors and others on projects; determines material and personnel requirements;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of the plumbing or steamfitting trade; operation and maintenance of steam power plant machinery, fluid and gas systems; boiler laws; safety precautions; record keeping.

Ability to: read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans and sketches; estimate materials and personnel needed to complete project; supervise crew of plumbers, steamfitters or inmates.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Three years of experience as a journey level plumber, pipe fitter or steamfitter.

NOTE:
• Some positions may require a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.

• Some positions performing plumbing work as defined under WAC 296-400A-005 requires current Washington State PL01 License/Certificate issued by the Department of Labor and Industries.

• Some positions will be required to obtain and maintain a Water Distribution Manager Certificate of Competency and/or Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate of Competency issued by the Department of Health. These certificates are required by the Safe Drinking Water Act of December 1974, effective January 1, 1978.
