Definition

Independently select, assemble, setup, test, and operate extracorporeal blood circulation
equipment during procedures such as cardiopulmonary bypass where patient’s circulatory or
respiratory functions must be supported or temporarily replaced.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general direction, responsible for the technology of extracorporeal circulation associated
with a variety of surgical procedures and cardiac management therapies.

Typical Work

Operate the heart and lung machine, temporary ventricular assist devices, auto transfusions and organ care system for any cardiac and cardio-thoracic cases;

Responsible for patient hemodynamics, administering medications and maintaining anticoagulation during cardiopulmonary bypass;

Operate the extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO);

Assist in the setup, initiation and troubleshooting of the ECMO circuits and pumps including responding to all ECMO initiations and emergency situations that involve the ECMO circuit;

Provide scheduled 24/7 on call coverage for all emergency cardiopulmonary bypass and ECMO procedures;

Provide continuing perfusion-related education for perfusionists and perfusion students including in-service education for other health care professionals;

Assist with maintaining the perfusion and ECMO related supplies and equipment;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: anatomy and physiology; heart-lung machine equipment use and maintenance; pharmacology for the drugs used during procedures; surgical practices, including sterile techniques; clinically appropriate array of equipment and supplies tailored to the cardiac, thoracic, vascular, organ transplant, obstetrics, and orthopedic surgical disciplines; blood product use and management; short and long term post care protocols for ventricular assist device and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation patients

Ability to: understand the procedures performed by surgeons; analyze lab results, imaging, and medical history information; work harmoniously with patients and other health professionals and paraprofessionals as part of the surgical team; exercise mature judgment in determining when to consult other resources for diagnosis; work independently and make medically consequential during procedures; manage multiple priorities; make clear explanations of technical conditions to professionals and nonprofessionals; physically operate large and highly technical equipment; react quickly in emergency situations

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Current certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion within one year of hire.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Graduation from an Accredited Perfusion Technology Program or approved program of Extracorporeal Technology.

Equivalent education/experience.
