Performs skilled journey-level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration, air-conditioning, and chilled water equipment, systems, and controls.
Typical Work
Installs, maintains, and repairs refrigerating equipment used in refrigerating plants and air conditioning, ventilation, and water cooling systems;
Overhauls electrical circuits, temperature and pressure controls, and other equipment, using wrenches, testers, and soldering and welding equipment;
Tests coils, valves, and connections to ascertain that system is leak proof and properly adjusted; recharges unit with proper refrigerant when necessary;
Estimates and orders materials and supplies needed to maintain equipment in good working condition;
Supervises and instructs helpers, patients or inmates;
Install, operate, maintain, and repair all types of refrigeration systems, including air-conditioning, chilled water systems, and refrigeration units.
Diagnose, inspect, trouble shoot, and overhaul electrical control circuits, temperature and pressure controls, and all related refrigeration components using manuals, blueprints, and equipment knowledge;
Test coils, valves, and connections to determine that systems are leak proof and properly adjusted;
Operate and maintain cooling towers, including water treatment systems;
Recharge units with proper refrigerant when necessary, and maintain and repair compressor units and departmental research refrigeration equipment;
Test, make measurements, and adjust all types of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems for most efficient performance;
May lead or instruct helpers as required;
May perform work in other trades;
Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in refrigeration work; principles of operation of refrigeration systems; occupational hazards and safety practices of refrigeration trade.
Ability to: diagnose troubles and make necessary adjustments or repairs; estimate time and materials; use hand and power tools; weld and solder.

Desirable Qualifications
Journeyman standing as a Refrigeration Mechanic as attested by:
a. Completion of recognized apprenticeship.
OR
b. Full journeyman status in Plumbers and Pipefitters' Union.
OR
c. Five years of experience in State service as full‑time helper to a journeyman Refrigeration Mechanic.
Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
